There’s an interview with the filmmakers on Vox about how they ended up doing the doc; I guess Vicente was a friend of theirs and they finally came to a seminar right as he was getting out. When he came clean with them, they decided to film his journey.

I think the strangest of it all was how he was completely going through the motions in his texts. Even before the murders were planned, he never replied angry or frustrated. It freaked me out. The way he talked about women were my red flags, but I wouldn’t have known it would have ever turned into a murder.
