I know less about Orazio’s work, but Artemisia’s Allegory of Painting was a self-portrait. Part of what interests me most about her art is the fact that it’s possible to trace the effect her rape had on her via her paintings.
It’s a good mistake to make because now everyone can compare and contrast how a man handled the subject matter vs. a woman. Caravaggio’s Judith is so dainty and hesitant.
