That’s the problem with this kind of comedy, it’s a fine line bt. satire and shitty. Writers need to be careful with that shit, and due to the popularity of this show, in the beginning, it sort of made fun of the bullshittery white folks do ( ie: two girls / two shirts) now it’s a parody of itself. As I have said

I don’t know how she identifies. I think she can be white and Venezuelan at the same time though. Fred Armisen has white privilege because regardless of his ethnicity he passes as white.

I agree white liberals who try desperately to support Black Lives Matter could be funny, as a sort of leftie version of the “I have a black friend” defense. Might not be a Portlandia brand of humor, though. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do a sketch that significantly touched on any political issue more

I think sometimes the writers at Jez like to take down other feminists that they think are being shown in a negative light because they don’t want to be seen as ‘crazy feminists’ themselves, which is really lazy and cynical. Only Jezebel sanctioned feminism is the correct feminism it seems sometimes.

Just as someone who knows a thing, the show asked numerous times to take the painting down, but was turned down. They didn’t want BLM in the show.

And there are no white people in Venezuela?

Yeah, ‘cuz there are no white people in Venezuela.

And he is white-passing and wealthy.

White hipsters: making racism ok since 1995.

Thank you. Seriously, thank you very much for that comment. What you areas ting there is I think what got under my skin about the tone of the posts here. The whole reason I don’t watch that show is because I DID think it was Anti-Trans and too much of it just seemed to be laughing at Armisen, who is a sociopathic

I’ve thought the very same thing so many times! It’s like “if you’re not going to cure racism, don’t even try to do anything!” Do not understand.

I think they were better about political stuffs earlier, but their later sketches have been more broad. I just remember the whole semi-longform“cult” sketch that I still can’t watch without feeling icky (lots of unexplored rape jokes and such). They moved away from politics in part because they’re not that great at

Another thing I don’t understand is why some people, who agree with BLM, are mad at these people for trying to do good. They don’t just have a sign up, they also host BLM in their space. I understand it is easy to by cynical of everything, but if we never recognize that some people are trying to good things in this

I was in there three days ago (visiting from Seattle) and almost all the people volunteering there were black, and the vast majority of the rest were people of color. I saw only a couple of white faces. So, yes. Sorry to ruin your snarky “question”, but the answer is an emphatic yes.

Here’s some shit Jezebel didn’t

If you actually click through and read the bookstore’s statement, it says that Portlandia requested they remove the sign, and the bookstore refused. The Jez article either intentionally or accidentally misrepresented the situation by saying the crew “removed” the sign.

Just a guess, but probably not the independent bookstore that said they lost money agreeing to being used as a set (for a skit that pretty much just straight-up mocks the owners of the store)...?

Well if you’d come here 15-20 years ago and were in the neighborhood where this bookstore is located you would have seen quite a few more. Alas, they have mostly been priced out to the suburbs now.

i mean they arent wrong that the show is like 100% white

I know it’s a story where the punchline writes itself, but I hope people will also remember that good humor punches up, not down.
