Wages are set by seniors or title depending on the union. There is no current mechanism to award performance. The entire nature of the union is that everyone gets the same as everyone else in their role.

Class in Europe doesn’t just imply money. It implies more than that, like social status, who your parents were, etc. The US hasn’t really had those distinctions. You can go from poor one day to super rich tomorrow and basically have the same access to everything your wealth allows.
