Been there and got stung way too many times. Gotta love how the phone operators never give out enough info to refer to them - “yeah, it’s Bob, there’s only one Bob so they’ll know who.”. Then you call, and “sorry there’s no Bob, and no notes on your account. Will you be paying by credit card today?”
Well, all I can say is all y’all are getting varnished coming and going on credit. Seriously - you can’t get a credit rating without carrying SOME balance on credit cards (go ahead and try), you can’t get a home without a credit rating.
Best first language to me were (don’t laugh): vbscript/vba,javascript Delphi, and Groovy.
To a point, I have to agree with you - understanding the basic idea of development to me, is more important than knowing all the intricacies of a language. I would add though that once you are “proficient” in more than one development language, new languages become that much easier to get onboard.

I agree, but it’s not the only thing to think about.
