I agree. I still have all my childhood books my favorite aunt gave me when I was a kid. They are beautiful and fun to read to the kids I know now. She always wrote a little note on the inside cover. I love her.
You could do something like: What are 3 things you want, 3 things you need, etc... That way they are still surprised.

My parents potty trained both my brother and I by making us never wear pants/diapers around the house. We were ALWAYS naked at least from the waist down. And we naturally knew better than to pee and poop on the floor so we learned to use the potty very quickly.

I completely agree that it is ethical. Myrna said that she took and paid for the class. Just because she reaped the benefits of the perk doesn't change that she played wholly by the rules. She was, in fact, a participating student.
