As a kid I watched a lot of period costume dramas complete with corsets and tiny waists and never developed any kind of unrealistic expectations about waist size.

When the waist controversy first came up, Disney was all "We didn't alter her waist! She's in a corset!" as if the only way to alter her waist was digitally. Using a corset is just a historic and low-tech way to alter the shape of a person's body.
