You can easily see that WW2-era films are propaganda now, in hind-sight. But for those who were the actual audience of those films, it was not be apparent. If it was obvious, nothing would have come of them.
Can any film transcend propaganda? All film-makers are trying to make a point. It's whether you agree with that point or not that you start viewing it as propaganda. Never be under the delusion that you aren't changed everyday by the messages pop-culture serves up and that you are all too willing to gulp up.
