More likely explanation is that while Americans were busying destroying countries and waging wars of justice, other countries simply invested in their own infrastructure.
Are you saying the the United States doesn’t have enough land for alternative energy sources? I remember watching a documentary which stated that the state of Nevada had enough surface area which if covered in solar panels could generate enough electricity for the entire world...

I’m pretty sure they will reuse their technologies and design used for this one. So, over the course of the whole range of products with similar architectures, they will definitely earn back their R&D expenditure.
