People love Bret Hart. A lot of those wrestlers/mma fighters grew up watching him on TV and seeing him at WWF events, it’s like going after your favourite uncle or something, provided he was a stroke victim and cancer survivor. I’m not sure what kind of restraint most people would’ve had in that scenario.
