You seem unreasonably negative about this. You ask why? Because it’s hard. Because you learn something about yourself when you attempt things like this. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous and illogical, this is simply another step further. Who draws the line? Not you; so take your judgement and shove it up your ass.

I could name dozens of activities that I don’t think are fun, but I’m not going to lambaste other people for engaging in them. This certainly isn’t my cup of tea, but the guy has successfully completed a supremely arduous task, and it seems mean-spirited to be all shitty about it.

Rode the Iron Butt in 1992... BMW R100RS. Air cooled. DNF’d due to a diode board failure after doing 4 days and 4400 miles. I was post toasties.

Did this in just under 53 hours one year. Just me, my zx-14, and some friends to meet up with in San Francisco. No fancy fuel tanks, no support crew, no stimulants. Even got 8 hours sleep in there.

I did 929 miles in 15-16 hours last April to a rally. When I got there my riding buddies all said I should have ridden the additional 71 miles to hit 1000 just for the hell of it. I actually felt pretty good and it had been a beautiful day for riding.

I did my first long motorcycle ride this week. Roughly 850 miles in 3 days, from San Clemente to Monterrey and back mostly on Hwy 1 and 101 with some detours on Mullholland hwy, [Redacted] rd and the hallowed grounds of Laguna Seca. At the end of every day I was asleep by 9:30 and woke up late, sore back, sore butt,

I did a lot of IBA rides in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. Never did a 50CC though. There was something about the freedom of movement in the seating postion of an ST bike and the mental engagement that made the miles roll by. I’m also one who regularly only sleeps three hours a night and can hit the ground running in

When I got out of submarine school in the early ‘80's I only had a few days off and I needed to drive from Groton, CT to Los Angeles and so I thought I’d drive straight through. I was in a 1979 Datsun pickup truck. LOL if you don’t even know what “Datsun” is.

Would have been nice to actually hear about the trip.

What was his fuel range with the BMW? Did he add an extra tank(s)?

Me n some friends are planning the 1500 in 36 hours Iron Butt this June, from San Diego up to Southern Oregon for the first 1000, get a few hours of sleep and then do a 500 mile loop in Oregon and crash for a full day at my families home, and then take two days to get home.

Go talk to a truck driver, and learn a thing or two about OTR.

I imagine that with the physical effort required to keep going for 18 hours...guy was pretty dirty, smelly, and probably had “swamp ass” lol.

Iron butt to the max! holy crap he had to average a high speed and very short stops to do that.

When I have to work two shifts in a row - especially when the second is overnight, id rather shower than sleep. It seems to create an artificial divider between the time periods. Makes it feel closer to a new day.

His survival is a glowing endorsement of the BMW K1600, too...

I did an Iron Butt once. ONCE. Austin TX to Dayton OH in one shot on a BWM F650GS Dakar. 1180 miles took me 21 hours of riding with no rests besides fuel ups, though I did get pulled over in Arkansas for riding on the shoulder during some random miles-long gridlock. Oops.

Did San Jose to Tampa in 48 hours on a Hayabusa. Worst 48 hours of my life, but I’d do it again in an instant.

Why all the snark and put-downs?

The guy set a crazy endurance record, and you seem hell-bent on taking him to task about everything.
