PHEVs are part of the plan. California tweaked its regulations in August 2022 with its “Advanced Clean Cars II” policy. This change encourages more (strong) PHEVs starting with model year 2026, two short years away.

Personally, I think going full-EV is a bad idea and mandating it is an even worse idea. And I’m an EV owner. Getting rid of the pure-ICE vehicle isn’t a terrible idea, but not leaving room for efficient PHEVs and hybrids that better fit the needs of most American drivers is a huge mistake.

I think we all agree that the overwhelming majority of American politicians are in the game strictly for their own financial benefit. So all we have to do is figure out to way to grease politicians pockets and before you know it, we’ll have a fully functioning EV charging network.

We won’t have a choice. The big international companies are shifting to EVs across the other big markets in Asia and Europe, and the economies of scale just don’t make sense to keep on making ICE vehicles for the US market alone.
