I think of it as Hydra being chopped up: there's a faction here, a faction there, none of them connected by a central council and unaware of each other but still committed to evil.

To be fair, Leiter's wife is killed (and maybe raped), but you can hardly blame that on Bond.

To the film's credit, it makes the plot seem very smart by virtue of being confusing but grounded.

Dalton plays Bond as a lonely soul who genuinely falls in love with the girl at the end. And when one of his comrades is killed, he visibly gets furious as opposed to other Bonds.

I spent much of my childhood alone reading Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes comics. I had all the books and read them in order, making sure that I made the snoring and laughing sounds correctly. I would only read the Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday book on Sunday. I'm still very much alone.
