Yeah, I actually agree with this and with Remy’s comment. My original comment suffered from poor phrasing. You put it very well by saying there should be an interesting premise, and that’s more in the spirit of what I was getting at. As a mathematician I actually love min-maxed characters, but I won’t allow somebody

That’s a good point, perhaps I should have been clearer in my phrasing, because I totally agree with you. As a mathematician, I love min-maxed characters, I think they’re delightful. Your character is a great example. But you roleplay the min-maxing, and my point was that a min-maxed character who DOESN’T roleplay

Heh, that sounds pretty interesting. I might steal the “roll a race” for a one-shot campaign or something like that. I could totally see that being a lot of fun.

Eh, people say that about paladins and rangers, as well. I think they’re usually just being contrary. Any character combination can be interesting if (a) you’re willing to commit to roleplay, and (b) you don’t min-max. If you’re min-maxing and you’re not roleplaying, you’re not playing D&D: you’re playing Skyrim.

It’s a very fun idea. You have the archetypal “reserved” priest who heals and gathers herbs and speaks softly, contrasted with the “blustery” dwarven stereotype who smashes things, gets so drunk he pisses himself, and screams bloody obscenities at the enemy while praising Gozreh. It’s delightful, really.

Dwarf cleric is obscenely powerful, at least in Pathfinder (essentially 3.5ed). They tank everything, rain healing every other turn, and have very decent buffs/debuffs, especially at higher levels. And if you encounter any undead? Cool, that’s free xp. Not to mention the roleplay is phenomenal.

I’m a huge Blade Runner fan, and I watched it in theaters with a couple of friends, only one of whom hadn’t seen the original. The way he approached the film when we were discussing it afterwards showed that he didn’t quite... “get” what Blade Runner was all about. There’s definitely a lot of thematic baggage that

All great games. I would say play the games that you have first, and then get around to Batman. I get the impression that generally the internet is getting better about spoilers (ex. I haven’t seen the new GoT season and I’ve only been spoiled on one extremely mild thing, and I haven’t even been trying to avoid

But that’s all it is: hokey feel-goodery. Again, it’s terrific cinema, but anybody who praises Interstellar as a great science fiction movie has no choice but to dismiss the ending. It would be one of my favorite movies if they had just cut to black as he’s preparing to enter the black hole. (Nolan, genius director

Interstellar was almost one of the greatest science fiction movies of the decade until the ending. Everything past the black hole was rubbish (I mean, it made for great cinema, but terrible science fiction. It didn’t even try to be speculative, just... make shit up.) Otherwise, yes. And Arrival ought to have been much

I’m a huge (classic) RPG fan. I’m 20, but I started on Morrowind and 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons. Now I play Witcher and Pathfinder, but I remember my roots. I’ll definitely be picking the game up, thanks for the rec.

Sounds like the dream version of a ttRPG brought to video game format. Thanks, I’ll definitely be picking this up when I have some free time and money.

k, but is the Neverwinter Nights (or Baldur’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity, etc.) comparison fair?

Two questions:

Depends on the type of game. For a Morrowind or Oblivion, yes, having every line fully voiced reduces the overall quality of the storytelling. But a game like Uncharted (or, as mentioned below, Life is Strange) benefits greatly from VA. I love Morrowind, it’s one of the first PC games I played fully through (the

This is Good Kinja, bad copypasta.

This article makes me so happy. Cecilia, your D&D stuff is some of the best stuff to come to Kotaku lately.

My city is currently rioting and looting because of this very issue. A “controversial” court case that was very nearly open and shut presented a verdict that didn’t fit the only acceptable narrative, so let’s spike racial tensions even higher and lose any goodwill we might have with the people we want to woo! Yaaaay!

As much as I have high hopes for Blade Runner 2049 and as much hope as I put in Villenhue (sp?) after Arrival, I trust this a lot more.

Shit. I’m about to start a new campaign with my group, and I really want to try this. The fact that I had a fun, cliche embracing, over-the-top satirical story already in place doesn’t matter. That much. I’ll weep as I save it for another campaign.
