Is MacFarlane’s name and presence anathema to any segment of the population that COUNTS? I mean, the AV Club has hated him for years, and I understand why even though I don’t share the hatred, but...who cares what you guys/us guys think? Yeah, A Million Ways to Die in the West was a misfire (although I paid money to

No. Orville is Star Trek (Brannon Braga says, “HELLO!”). Discovery, is a shitty and overly expensive Syfy rip off, of Star Trek.

I think the actual fans have different ideas of what constitutes good Star Trek than the ‘professional’ reviewers do.

I too am enjoying the unique brand of awkwardness of the dialogue in The Orville, which is distinct from TNG’s unique brand of awkwardness.

Audiences don’t appear to agree with their media critic overlords. The Orville has an 89% positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes versus a 20% rating from critics. Seems to be quite a huge disconnect there.

I find it quite ironic that the Rotten Tomatoes scores for critics (hated it) versus audience (loved it) are practically the inverse for Star Trek Discovery which just barely managed a 61% audience rating. It seems to be further proof that both Hollywood and the NYC blogosphere have completely lost touch with the rest

I wouldn’t say the Orville is serialized (at least not yet) but that it has continuity between episodes. TOS didn’t, but TNG did; especially in its later seasons. Serialization is one (too) long story stretched over multiple episodes where none of the episodes make sense on their own which excludes viewers who want to

It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great, but it was endearingly enjoyable, for the most part. The special effects are pretty amazing at least, so it’s got that going for it.

Mediocre? You have this show confused with Discovery.

What exactly do people want out of this show? Obviously it’s nowhere near being Star Trek level good, but TNG was even further away from being Star Trek level good in its first season. Most of the comedy misses rather than hits, but at this point I don’t care because The Orville is clearly a sci-fi drama, not a sci-fi

I would LOVE to read your opinion on the STTNG episode called “The Outcast”. In this story, the Enterprise comes to a planet where all the people are androgynous. Whenever a person begins to display either male or female characteristics, they are taken away for reprogramming. One of the aliens begins to display female

I have a hard time taking you and i09's criticisms of this show seriously. After seeing the first two episodes, especially the much stronger second episode, I can’t shake the feeling you guys just have a hateboner for Macfarlane. He’s certainly not perfect, but I think it’s influencing how you’re receiving this show

Wow Really ???

What happened to applauding the effort? Was that not a negative enough endpoint for the review? When did io9 decide ridicule must punctuate articles like this? We will never get TNG season 8, so let the Orville be assessed on its own merits, not your expectations of the people involved.

And homosexuality in Africa is something you can be executed for. This movie isn’t just marketed in the US.

So you get angry because I make an observation about a character that mostly in comics books is forgettable, though there are really a few gems around, are defined and bound up completely by a male character. I mean really when you get down to it what makes Harley different from the 100 other “strong” female

Except for the part where I never said you can’t assume anyone has ever done anything ever, I’m just not going to say “yes, for sure, so and so has slept with so and so”. It’s not a “big leap” to assume adults engage in sex. It’s a big leap to assume everyone on a professional team of agents and superheroes are all

Confidence lies with Bruce Timm and Paul Dini who WB doesn’t tap for the live action, which is a shame because they know what the hell they are doing with these characters.

I cannot believe DC has enough confidence at this point to actively add any more movies.

I’ve honestly never cared for forcing a lesbian relationship between the two. One is that we have too few movies simply about friendship, which can be as strong a bond between some people as a sexual relationship. Two is I believe turning them into a couple has less to do with promoting LGBT values than it does
