Contemporary reviews of The Dark Crystal just make you want to strangle them for dumping on the movie because it’s too dark for 5 year olds, because of course a movie with puppets can only be for preschoolers.

The Shining comes to mind.

Kubrick was nominated for a worst director Razzie the year it came out. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me was pretty universally reviled when it came out. Halloween 3 also had a cultural re-evaluation

Why regurgitate Peter over and over again when you can do something fresh and different?

Blade Runner (also 1982) was likewise dismissed at the time as well and was both a critical and commercial flop. It wasn’t until a few years later that it became acknowledged as the classic it is.

And he wasn’t old enough to drink. They were both kids. I don’t know about the situation, maybe he was extremely shitty, but trying to make it out like he was some old guy preying on teenagers is absurd.

I’ve never heard that qualifier before, I thought the point was that it made sense basically from adolescence up. But hey, I’m not gonna make this my hill to die on - personally would never have dated a 17 year old when I was 20.
