Community was built on celebrating and subverting the tropes of tv, specifically those of episodic sitcom. Modern Family is not. It is straightforward, mainstream, network and ad—driven middle brow entertainment. It is effective and good at that. It is not good at being COMMUNITY.

This was a fun episode. It didn't further any storyline much or develop any character much— except to let us know Marvin's first memory. But it was fun— in a gimmicky way.
