I largely agree, though I wouldn’t call it entitled so much as insulting and a bit of a jerk.

Did this discourse exist around Maleficent? I feel like people were mostly jazzed with that.”

It’s amazing how many people comment on these articles without ever reading a word of it. The usual suspects are here touting RACISM!! (Emilio at his finest) but that’s not what the article is about at all nor is that what the backlash is about. The backlash stems from a clearly entitled actress who many people

I’m not sure how widespread all this dislike from the non-Shapiros of the world is but I hope this is kind of accurate because I hate the Disney remake trend on a fundamental level. But it seems like no matter what even if the movie’s bad (or at least demonstrably worse than the original) they keep making them, and

Cynicism. The reason we care is because of cynicism. We all care about this is because the controversy is the only reason to care about it, and I suspect that Disney knows this all too well. They’re not getting anyone to talk about their remakes on the basis of quality; we all know they’re cheap, cynical cash-grabs.

I was present for the Maleficent discourse. A lot of people were not thrilled about it.

What she said about it being a scary story. It is a very scary story. A monstrous stepmother attempts to have her stepdaughter murdered. One of my favorite versions is Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997) which, admittedly, is an awful title unworthy of the script and cast. It features Sam Neill and Sigourney Weaver

I think the problem is less “oh this thing isn’t going to be carbon copy of the original” and more “this looks like dogshit made by people with unoriginal and/or terrible ideas”.

I’m not sure how she came to that take on the original. Stalking? That’s a weird interpretation.

The 90's on the other hand... that seemed like when Hollywood really got into the three-act Formula. Batman was a hit in 1990, so then every year we’d get some movie with heavily-made-up bad guys and shot on towering soundstage sets. Schwarzenegger decided to broaden his range, to stultifying effect. Harrison Ford,

TBF I think this is kind of the OP’s point when he or she or they say that movies in the ‘70s might be meandering, but they’re visceral: they’re not always good, but even the crap ones often have seem to have something interesting that makes them seem in someway distinctive or at least like an actual person was

I just think that Sorcerer is an absolute monster of a movie, an incredibly powerful one and with a very particular point of view, and the comparison with any modern one, where there is barely any room for character, is always going to be unfair.

It’s not like he’s saying something people don’t already know, but I appreciate it all the same. I like when actors call out Hollywood, because it usually tends to just be the fans. His own mediocrity notwithstanding, at least it signals that he’s aware of it, because lately I wonder how much these stars even care

Yeah, we guys had to go through that with Candace Cameron. Ugh indeed

Audiences were much different then too. They had an appetite for films like these and made these auteurs successful. After decades of the commercialization of everything (rampant consumer culture), a flattening of social consciousness, and just absolutely low standards we have audiences who’d rather lose themselves

That was just a great series. Watched it. Loved it. Bought the DVDs. The fake movie trailers were stellar.

I’m surprised that a certain troll hasn’t come in to bash us all as baby-brains for watching superhero fantasy.  I guess he only does that with Marvel films.

I mean one of those castmates kinda had foot in mouth disease a decade ago on Twitter and lost a lot of goodwill that way.

I’m glad to see the AV Club went ahead and got it’s weekly mandatory “We hate Zachary Levi, an Actor No One Else Really Thinks About or Reports On” post out the way on Monday so the rest of the week is clear.

I might be missing something, but is this take “guy who starred in one mediocre film not allowed to talk about how he wishes movies were higher quality”?
