Would you abort a child with Down Syndrome? Do you not see why some people might want to given the challenges associated with raising a mentally disabled child and lack of social support? Studies have shown that families are far more likely to abort fetuses with severe mental disabilities than ones with physical

Well, I see where you're coming from, but what they wanted to do was abort the disabled fetus, which to be honest I think is different from abandoning a real living person, which is definitely worse. I can at least see why they would want to selectively abort the fetus.

That's your opinion, but I think by some legal and medical criteria it would meet that definition.

What a joke. What about all the other families who are struggling desperately to find appropriate care, living situations, day programs, work opportunities etc for their Down Syndrome children?

I think there is some moral gray area here - (hypothetically) if the surrogate chooses to not abort the disabled child even after agreeing to do so before she entered into the contract, why shouldn't SHE be stuck with the child's bills for reneging?

Yes, this would be the ideal situation I think to have such an agreement.

Mmmmm I don't think that's really what I said.

This is reality, the technology is here and we need to deal with it and talk rationally about what should and should not be allowed in regards to in vitro, surrogacy, pre-implantation screenings, etc. You crying "FOR SHAME" isn't gonna make it go away.

No, it would fall under the 46.5%, since if you see what I said about classifications in terms of how they would affect quality of life, Down Syndrome would fall into category 3 out of 4 (with 4 being diseases that are incompatible with life). However, that number is an average that includes all chromosomal anomalies,

Then that's bullshit, no offence.

Agreed on all counts

LOL

Isn't that what I've been saying throughout the thread? No need for snark...

Interesting, I'd love to see the link to the study if you have it.

What if a woman is carrying a baby herself and chooses to abort a child with Down Syndrome? What's the difference?

Then don't be a surrogate.

Well then screw them in that case.

Newsflash, not every person (including people with Down Syndrome) are the exact same and feel the same way about things.

Well, a lot of people would (and do) disagree with you. Go see my post further down thread to see how common selective abortions in the case of CNS (and other) defects are. I'm not sure what the point is in forcing a woman to carry to term a fetus that she doesn't want. Isn't that what abortions are for? Abortion, on

So it's not a severe disability? Seriously? Why do you take that as a value judgement rather than a statement of fact?
