The app was basically only available in an official Play store capacity for a few months before it was yanked for whatever reason.
As for subscriptions to software, there's basically only one piece of software company I know that does that and that's Adobe. And the reason they do that is because the up front cost was normally $700 or so per app. Oh, and they charged money for new versions.
Except the difference is it's an entirely new app, also the $3.99 price point is per account token and it's better when it's implemented that way so as to keep people from just pirating the app and using up tokens.
