A bit late to this party, but giving the cool teacher the name "Bill Haydon" and having him first show up with a bike is definitely an allusion to 2011's adaptation of Tinker Tailor Solider Spy.
Hate to be that guy, Teeth, but you might consider seeing Inherent Vice again. I wasn't sold on it either, initially — in fact, it was easily my least favourite PTA joint — but it really comes alive when you're not trying desperately to make sense of the zany plot.
