Oooh, I'm excited for this challenge. I recently bought a cheap pair of knock-off Beats headphones. Needless to say they broke at the hinge. I looked around my office for something plastic (TSA friendly) to fix them with, and found some plastic spoons. I taped two across the hinge, one facing up, one facing down. Then

Bacon ripples when one side cooks (and shrinks) faster than the other. The more often you flip it when you pan fry it, the flatter it will be, and the more evenly it will cook. Sorry if this has been posted already.

The cool thing about this paper and the related work from previous authors (See Schiller et al, and Monfils et al.) is that it is completely different from extinction, which is what most of the commentors are referring to. With extinction, or systematic desensitization the fear memory still exists, and can lead to

I am a graduate student receiving a stipend as a research assistant. My financial aid department has refused to certify federal loans because they include my stipend as part of my total aid package. In contrast when I received a stipend as a teaching assistant, they did not include this as part of my total aid

I have a pair of sennheiser MM200 bluetooth headphones. It's nice to be able to tuck the bluetooth module into my beanie during the winter. This helps me avoid the dreaded coat, scarf, cable tangle.

I cut the bottom off of a funnel and screwed it to a wine bottle. Now I make pour over coffee using Chemex filters.

Ok, so let's say you're the cousin... What do you eat the night before the big day?

Some of the commenters have addressed the whole MRI issue. I don't think an MRI machine would rip the tattoo out of your skin. However, the RF fields generated by the gradient coils might induce a current and cause the tattoo to heat up and burn the individual. This raises a question. Could other, similarly strong RF

I believe the one in the picture is sold by IKEA. It totally sucks. It's thin and metal, and it hurts your hand when you try to pull a cork. Also, the curve of the handle makes it impossible to get any leverage.

I named my android tether network "virus" followed by a string of random characters, to scare off random people at the airport. You'd be surprised at the number of people who still try to connect.

Great post Alan!

@OtherTimes: You're not too far from the truth. I'm pretty sure that TMS is currently used to treat depression.

It would be pretty cool if there was a BSOD scanner app on ios or android that could recognize error messages when viewed through the phone's camera.

Does the brightness tip apply to all monitors or just CRTs? More specifically, does changing the brightness setting on an LCD monitor affect the power consumption?

@The Werewolf: I agree with you that travel to other stellar systems is going to be pretty difficult. I also agree with you that we cannot save the human race 12 people at a time. However, I think your pessimism is a little premature.

@father_zossima: I think you absolutely right that context, mentorship, and peer relationships are the most important aspects of the university experience. However, I think that incorporating YouTube videos into the syllabus may actually help professors to better mentor their students.

@remicus: This probably isn't very helpful to the driver of any given car, but you can usually tell which side of the car the fuel door is on by looking at which side of the car the exhaust pipe is on. Usually they are on opposite sides.
