Dumbbells are a lot less forgiving in the sense that if you can’t lift it with that one arm, you can’t lift it. Your other arm can’t compensate for the weakness like in a barbell. For barbells, it’s easy to get some sort of muscle imbalance like one pectoral is larger than the other.
