Been stationed there and unfortunately among all the service branches the culture of the Marine Corps tends to be the least, shall we say, progressive? The Commandant of the Marine Corps (Conway) was the most vocal opponent of the repeal of DADT and open integration of gay service members, right now their brass are…
Marines are idiots, which is the primary explanation here.
I don’t mean the critics, I just mean the people who just repeat how bad it is without even watching it, which I noticed in Kotaku and io9 articles and several Youtube channels. That cynical tone while trying to sound clever, it sickens me.
I get where you’re coming from, but I feel like the reasoning is there in my comment — going into a movie knowing you’re going to dislike it gives you a chance to feel good about yourself for being “ahead of the curve” and superior to that piece of crap film rather than just suffering through it. You can have a hearty…
You cut right to the heart of it. This same dynamic comes into play when JJ Abrams does a movie. Critics with a built in bias and expectation of not liking it.
Oh thank god. I was really getting sick of the constant bashing of this movie by the writers who have not even seen the movie and just link the review to their own article in some witty quip like this as though its a collective opinion and the movie is universally fucked. I just watched it and I really, really liked…
In my estimation, the majority of people who have disliked the movie fall into two categories:
Or is the problem that his white-boy-stitck is actually more successful than genuine black hip-hop artists?
yep yep yep. that is THE fucking key. i’ve said it time and time again on this site. black people love giving white people props even if they’re just good, and not great, at whatever black cultural expression they’re doing. go to an hbcu and see a white girl with some rhythm. Black people will gas her THEE fuck up. Go…
As a re-imagining of the series lore I thought the first Resident Evil film was great! Even now it holds up a lot better than most mid-2000s action movies. But alas, Resident Evil 2 butchered Nemesis by giving him feelings and Alice telekinesis.
I get why it bugs the purists, but Resident Evil is a pretty great action movie. I think we should all declare Milla Jovovich an honorary Master of Unlocking for her fine work in that series, even the weird sequels with cloning and 3D tentacle face.
I think uncharted would translate to film easily.
It seems to me that the "rape is about power" idea really has more to do with how rape victims perceive rape than how rapists do. Reading the thread, it's pretty clear that the power is a tool used by rapists to get the sex they want, not a goal in and of itself. A poster below said something like "but rapists…
It's not an "active choice" unless you believe people actively choose their gender which they obviously don't. On one level you're saying its a culture of rape whilst on another level you're saying people actively choose to behave in this way. That's clearly contradictory. To address rape in the long term we have to…
If rape is best prevented by educating young men, and people generally, I think the "rape is about power" mantra does a disservice to the cause. Rape is explicitly about power when used as a weapon of war, or during home invasions, or by serial rapist sociopaths, etc. But in these cases above, power is more of an…
Unless you have an honest but mistaken belief that she's interested in continuing. Which can be a consequence of ambiguity + some fucked up gender role notions about women being obligated to put up token resistance.
I think maybe it's a matter of defining the main motivation. We perhaps see a stranger rape as mostly about exercising power/terrorizing a woman - it's such an extreme to go to in order to achieve an orgasm. Whereas acquaintance rape, as described in some of the Reddit examples, gets a bit hazier: you're friends and…
Maybe the take away can be that drinking to excess and being around those drinking to excess can be dangerous for a variety of reasons.
that was difficult to read, but I'm so glad you put this together, Katie. Some of the stories were disgusting, but others were heartbreaking. In particular the one categorized under "peer pressure." However, the story that really stood out to me was the one categorized as "I can't help my dick!" I understand why the…
