I’m not skeptical at all about “Finn” being a nickname based on “FN”. There’s a ton of support for it, not limited to Finn’s status as a Stormtrooper, his lack of a last name, and several toys making reference to that designation with recorded dialogue. It’s really not a big leap at all.
