Some of it is operant conditioning; we get good (enough) results frequently (enough) with a procrastinating ethos so we keep doing that. Every time a procrastinated project turns out fairly well reinforces the pattern of slack. Also, intervening timewaste activities are just more fun than hacking away at some behemoth.

Feel your pain; I sloshed some coffee on mine a couple years back. Try putting it in dry rice in a box for a couple days. Mine works, whizzes and rattles like a mother and cuts out sometimes but works.
