Up till a couple of years ago I worked on the camera for this driver monitoring system. It’s clever but was frustrating because what it’s trying to do is engineer a solution to a particular flavor of human stupidity.

We all have an acceptable level of risk in our pursuits and there is nothing wrong with ‘slowing down’ a bit. Situations like this just remind me to live fully and to not keep putting things off till next year.

As far as I can tell they just realized they could remove them and most people wouldn’t notice (Cost reduction!! Someone met their targets.) And now they can sell it back to you as a ‘smokers package. It also frees up space in the center console area for all that new fangled technology people can’t live without.

It allows you a second chance to burn some of the unburned combustion products. This helps mileage slightly and betters emissions. Change your oil regularly and the extra ‘dirt’ isn’t a concern.

But the investment in the people and development of the programs is insanely expensive but the OEMs insist on doing it in house. I bet GM doesn’t spend the coin on their infotainment that Apple spends on it’s development
