They really seem to be dropping the ball on so many important parts of Lyra’s characterisation. If she’s not the one opening the daemon cages, how do you draw the parallel to her releasing the spirits later? Her characterisation and arc are so perfectly calibrated, I don’t get why they’d want to mess around with it.

This seems like such a major fumble, it’s really turning me off watching the show (eventually. stupid australian tv). I’ve never cried harder over anything than Lyra leaving Pan behind to go into the world of the dead. The physical and emotional pain of that scene is so palpable I get choked up just thinking about it.

Haven’t seen the show yet, but god I love that book. It is so unflinchingly brutal though.

I’ve only made it through the first hour so far. Maybe I’m just an idiot but it didn’t really hold my attention at all. Did anyone else find the CGI de-aging stuff kinda weird and distracting? I kept losing track of which era something was supposed to be because it just always looked like 75 year old De Niro shambling

Los Campesinos! Technically they’ve been around since 2006 but their output since 2010 has been incredible. I don’t get how they can remain so under the radar when Romance is Boring, Hello Sadness, and No Blues are three of the best albums of the decade. I genuinely think something sinister has happened with their

That’s my pick, too. So much potential, never to be realised :(

Fuck yes to #1. MMFR and Parasite were the best cinema experiences of this decade for sure. Her is one of my favourite movies ever but is so emotionally bruising that I can barely stand to watch it. The love for It Follows is bewildering to me, but La La Land has got to be the most infuriating movie of the decade. A

I don’t think any movie has ever made me angrier than It Follows, mainly because of the way it sets up a bunch of movie “rules” which the characters then break repeatedly with no ill consequences. Truly do not get why people found that movie to be anything special.

I just never really got the intense love for Breaking Bad. Otherwise, this seems generally spot on.

The plane scene makes me cry w laughter every time. There is a colonial woman on the wing churning butter! Also, Annie’s little “oh my god” when her fellow passenger tells her “I had a dream the plane went down. You were in it”

My favourite part is when Helen calls Annie’s bluff and makes her eat a sugared almond, while Annie is like, grey and sweating and trying so hard not to puke. Wiig’s physical comedy is beyond perfect

Her Body and Other Parties was one of those books that felt made just for me, so I am beyond excited to read this. Also, Abandon Me by Melissa Febos is another gorgeous/heartbreaking memoir of queer relationships and abuse which I would wholeheartedly recommend if you enjoy feeling bruised by your reading material.

I agree tbh. It’s gone from spooky and inexplicable encounters to either totally overwrought fiction OR horrifying home invasion stories. I’d rather hear about something weird and unsettling, and possibly otherworldly - a great example being that person who had dreams about going into their parents’ bedroom and seeing

Yeah, it was a little demon thing with cloven hoofs who’d try to lure kids away with her or something. I found it super creepy and also very atmospheric

These are all much better than the winning ones but still, this year’s crop wasn’t particularly creamy, was it? My personal favourites remain the little girl in the bathroom story from like 2012 and the Venka story, which somehow didn’t win despite being SO fucking scary and beautifully written.

In Australia renters basically have no rights so I can’t even fathom being allowed to do this to my space. You’re not even allowed to hang anything on the walls unless you get written permission to install a hook, and my own landlord will promptly evict me if I miss even one rental payment.

Yikes, who’s letting Gary Dauberman adapt another King story? That dude shouldn’t be entrusted with any others after what he did to IT.

Parasite truly is a perfect movie. I can’t remember the last time I felt so much joy at watching a movie unfold.

I was a staunch Riverdale defender but even I had to give up like a third of the way into s3. The balance of camp and seriousness in s1 was so perfectly calibrated and the cast are all super talented, the inevitable car crash was just too painful for me to witness

While you could argue that people can read “too much” into minor interactions/characters’ sexualities, it’s fucking hilarious to me that you chose the gayest possible example to try and prove your point. Sam and Frodo are 100% in love with each other, sorry bro.
