My 20 year old beater ranger gets better fuel economy than these crap cans and the ranger is truly a POS. However, it makes it to and from home depot just fine with a 1000 lbs of sand in the bed, so why should I buy a new truck when I can have a beater and a sedan that both get better gas mileage for a lot less money?
The segment is failing because people want a SMALL TRUCK. I’ve been screaming this from the rooftops for the last 15 years. Make a legitimately small pickup and you can get better MPG. Most people don’t need to tow a C130, or use a truck that often as an actual truck. For those people, there’s an easy solution and…

Perhaps my perception of scale differs from the USDM (Read: reality), but my 2009 WRX sedan feels like what I would call a mid-size sedan. It’s not cramped at all, has plenty of room, kids perfectly. It’s the size I would expect for a mid-size sedan.
All of this is true, HOWEVER, it was so small and low to the ground that my RX-8 handled like it was on GODDAMN RAILS. And it sounded like a jet engine.
