Wow. Watching that made me feel physically uncomfortable.

Wow that video is the actual worst. The black “thugs,” the dramatic reveal to “ooh a white lady,” whatever the fuck she was doing with her mouth while singing. I stopped there because I just could not anymore. Who allowed that to exist?!
It’s funny because I was talking about this with friends, and our answer to your question (which I posed) was pretty much, yes. Don’t ever film in Africa if it’s a story about two white non-African people falling in love, because the experience of Africans—colonialism and all the conflicts, crises, othering, and…
The whole “theme” of the video is that it’s a what 30s/40s movie shoot. Unfortunately, that means black directors or film crew workers would have been non-existant anyway.
Isn’t the point of legalization the ability to go after traffickers, pimps and abusive johns directly while creating an environment where sex workers feel safe and comfortable reporting crimes against them? How can they do that if the police are likely to say, confiscate their book of business and just start dialing…
I’m curious if you also worry about long haul truckers and female bartenders’ safety, as those are two of the most dangerous jobs for women. And do you feel angry for models, dancers, and athletes who also use their bodies as objects? One knee injury and a dancer is no longer of value to anyone. Her body and skill are…
I don’t understand this perspective at all. They should have the right to sell it, but there should be no legal market for it, which constantly threatens their livelihood and makes unwilling traps out of them?
I’m a gay male sex worker, and I appreciate this article. Was a little bit confusing at times though. I loved this quote “Tell me more about why I’m pathetic, and you’re definitely not.”
Most sex workers (that I know) hate the Nordic Model, as they feel for all it’s rhetoric, it’s still used to punish them, just in a way that let’s society feel good about themselves while they do it. Most (again, of the ones I know) prefer New Zealand as a national model.
Decriminalize sex work. Don’t legalize and regulate it. Allowing a patriarchal, white, male-dominated government to regulate the sexuality of marginalized women is only going to harm sex workers more.
“There must be a reminder that who we are is worth more than the world’s ignorance would have us believe.”
Great article. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything else on a mainstream website that does such a great job of cutting through the misogyny and sexual shaming which permeates most articles on this topic.
That is something I’ve noticed a lot with mainstream feminism: it’s less pro-woman and more anti-men.
The big problem with all those articles is praising the Nordic model whilst ignoring the opinions of actual sex workers.
Right!? She may as well have typed out the words “dumb whore” because she was so very clearly thinking them. What an asshole.
My reminder is that it may feel safer but is never better to laugh and call someone deluded instead of recognizing we are all making compromises to live our best life in a hard world. She’s the dumb one, I’m the smart one. She’s the lazy one, I’m the hard-working one. It’s easy to despise someone for not having more…
