I appreciate the initial observer in asking the question “What is the onion for?” and your response. Both remind me that things weren’t always like this. Apparently when you start to get old (43 counts, right?) you really do start to forget.

You’ve stumbled upon Poe’s Law, which basically says that when you go to the extremities of any topic you can no longer distinguish between parody and sincerity.

Well, there was a time (some say it was within many of our lifetimes, but these days, every week feels like a month or longer, so...what was I saying???) when the vast majority of news items was relatively “normal”, and didn’t sound like they were created by an abstract artist with brain damage.

It’s quite simple: NASCAR fans are dolts.
