Gah, CNN. “Chicago in turmoil.” Yeah, no. One protest and it’s been peaceful. From my place in the admittedly lilly-white North Side, it’s business as usual.

I’ve always made it a point to avoid these types of videos, but then I thought of all the mothers who lay awake at night wondering if their sons will come home, the women who wait by the phone to hear their husbands or boyfriends on the other end of the line, my family waiting to get that phone call that my brother…

Couldn’t agree more. I feel that Chicagoland (and even though I live in Northwest Indiana, I still consider myself part of Chicago) gets a very bad rap with the emphasis on gang violence and such. But I definitely feel that there’s no place I’d rather be.

For what it’s worth, I’m black and I’m turning it off for now. I need a couple of days if I’m going to keep engaging with this. Nothing but baking pies and looking and puppies until next week.

Hate Rahm. Love Chicago. And I want better for my city, and the people who call it home.

I had the same thought. And then I grieve the thought that I can turn it off, because I’m white. I can turn it off and it doesn’t touch me. But that isn’t the case for so many, and it is not their fault.

I was watching this with my dad and he said that they walked towards him. He was angled away from them. To me, it seemed almost like he wasn’t “aware” of them. He didn’t seem to respond to them. I can see why the city gave the family $5 million right away because this is pretty damning.

Fine, fine, they’ve charged the cop with murder. Are they going to assign a competent, unconflicted goddamn prosecutor to it? And make sure the judge isn’t a former prosecutor? Because as we’ve all seen, charging cops is a good start, but it isn’t enough.

Those 16 bullets cost the taxpayers of Illinois $5 million, and a piece of their collective soul.

I’m sure she’ll be treated the same as say, a male African American drug dealer with no DEA agent father?
