I don’t see it as different from the owner or editor of a newspaper claiming their news reporting is neutral even though their editorial content is not.

There is absolutely a conflict with a person who has open political preferences saying the platform they privately own and control will be politically neutral. It’s fairly obvious, and it strikes me as weird to pretend it’s not there. Political neutrality and political preference openly conflict. 

Yes, Musk claiming the thing he privately owns and controls should be politically neutral is directly “at variance” with him coming out explicitly in favor of a particular party in an upcoming election.

But the article doesn’t make that claim—the article doesn’t claim that Twitter an alter-ego for Elon Musk, or that he refers to things Twitter “should/will do” interchangeably with things he himself “should/will do”.
