I think it would be a very flawed or rather strange-loopy simulation, if it allowed for simulated individuals to gain insight into the fact that they could be simulated. Except of course, this is actually some factor that the hypothetical simulation is making allowance for.

It's basically all about responsibility. No authority can actually take responsibility from your shoulders and whatever you do under whatever circumstances - it's you having to take the responsibility. Even soldiers end up with post-traumatic stress disorder because it's not so easy to wipe away responsibility.

"... if you don't do it, somebody else will ..." that's about the most stereotyped excuse brought forward in those cases. It however supposes that "somebody else" is just as gullible confronted with authority than you are - which might be false after all.
