Considering that this movie was directed by Gareth Edwards, the man behind the freaking awesome Monsters B-movie hit...the fact that instead of focusing on the Kaiju fighting, and focusing on the human drama going on AROUND the kaiju, makes the moments shown in the video above have much more impact.

I agree with you on the Night of the Living(1968 version) weapon being the first Zombie Apocalypse weapon. The only problem is, it wasn't the most common seen in the movie(though it had the most screen time)
