I know they have their flaws, but I rather liked Dogma which is the best thing Kevin Smith has ever directed (not a backhanded compliment) and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Rickman did elevate both but I wouldn't say he saved them.
And if we are fact checking the article, Penthouse's publisher went bankrupt in 2003 not 2013. FriendFinder Networks Inc. went bankrupt in 2013 though.

It's for name recognition. If you are repeating the name frequently because your team plays there you are more likely to think of it first when you are looking for a bank, airline, etc. Not saying it's effective but I can understand the theory behind it.
