Credit Fox more than Marvel for this decision since it is a Fox movie like all the other X-Men films. I doubt Marvel had any say in the matter.

The ratings are the lowest on CW and if that's not fatal on the CW I don't know what is. The only thing that could save it is if the critical acclaim convinces the CW that it should just not cancel shows regardless of how they do until they hit that 4 season mark.

I don't think they ever said that there would only be a season of each show before the crossover. I look at this as just an expansion of the plan based on the critical (and maybe popular but who know since they don't release data on it) success of what's come before.
