Furthermore, in a large blockchain network, there is virtually no chance of someone inserting a “false” transaction (i.e. trying to double-spend the same amount of money).

It adds work to the process. And it’s better for eluding capital controls than it is for money laundering. (I would argue that is a closely related phenomenon if not a form of money laundering.)
