I think it is relevant to the characters in the film that one chooses a lobster — long-lived but solitary and kind of a dull existence — and the other chooses a dog, which doesn't live as long but has companionship and more of an emotionally rich life.
I agree. Lanthimos could have kept the whole story in the hotel and it would have been a tight little satire of cultural values, and certainly enjoyable, but moving the action outside and exploring the themes from the other side made the film more challenging and interesting to me. I guess I also found the whole Loner…
I guess I liked the second half because it sort of veered the film into an unexpected direction. I was getting a little bored with the hotel scenario so when it shifted into almost a totally different kind of movie, it re-energized my interest.
