Atkinson's character is also the salesperson who infuriates Alan Rickman with his gift wrapping. It was actually a dropped plotline: Atkinson was supposed to appear in each of the stories as a sort of helpful almost-Cupid, subtly guiding the characters towards love and christmas spirit.
Thankfully, that was abandoned.
