I think a solution that preserves the EC at the federal/constitutional level is worth exploring. Remember that each state is at liberty to “chuse” its electors in whatever way it wants to - that’s the level that should be the laboratory.

It isn’t a “bureaucracy” and it isn’t watered down. The reasons the EC was written into the constitution are just as valid “in this day and age” as they were at the time: Unfiltered direct democracy leads to all kinds of fever-dream dumbness.
