Besides the Mazda, these are all awful suggestions. Go buy a Volvo 240 Wagon with a five-speed and pay cash until you can save up to buy something else.

Volvo 240 Wagon! The back folds flat and you can sleep back there. Decent on gas. Will need to hit the mountains with a bit of speed but it will make it.
