I'll gladly accept "Walking to New Orleans" since its sound encompasses more than the brass band jazz tradition of the town.  But Newman's whiteness should be far from the reason the song is chosen.

"Romeo Had Juliette" or pretty much anything off the New York album.

Except "Go to the Mardi Gras" is specific for a particular area of Louisiana.  Newman's song encompasses the entire state.

'California' songs better than those selected by the writers:

My annoying, bitchy, elderly next-door-neighbor always puts on her backyard sprinklers on early in the morning and angles it in a way where it sprays over our wall and gets all over my car (our driveway lines up with the side of her backyard).  Just had it washed yesterday too.
