Johnnie To is also the same director who does super enjoyable romantic comedies. He uses his show-don't-tell style effectively for that genre too.
One of John Hurt's specialties was playing roles that were so heartbreaking that it's tough to watch again. The Elephant Man, for sure. But the young man set up to be falsely convicted as the serial killer (set up by Richard Attenborough!) in 10 Rillington Place just about did me in.
From the montage, I laughed out loud at 00:59 mark.
"Jesus!"
"Yes…?"
"Huh? Nothing. Jesus…"
"Yes?"
It's hysterical. I think Branagh said something about a German accent by way of Baywatch. You've earned your Pancakes eternal pass, Kenneth!
I LOVE that AV Club got around to doing the Up series. (Silent fist pump in the air)
I can hum the main theme from Thor pretty well! It's majestic and melodic. Very Patrick Doyle!
Serious answer? Because Jimmy Fallon just plays silly games, and the gimmicks that Corden does for the celebs actually plays around with the celebs' talents. (Usually.) And I also like Corden seems inspired by Letterman (his Take A Break series is quite charming).
Me too! I may not watch all his movies (especially lately), but Ebert got it right. Man is trying all the time.
I thought he ruined The Avengers. Re-watching the first movie and Age of Ultron recently, he seemed to be aiming for the big funny quips (which is why he's so beloved) that punch the scene instead of serving the story.
I love Elementary just as you described too, @icanbeanassholesorry:disqus. The pay-off we viewers get after four years of establishing great characters, mostly thoughtful writing, some hilarious quips and we even get an awesome turtle!
"I always get Joffrey."
Is it strange to ask why even more poorly rated shows (like "Reign") get so much media coverage? Are they that good? Because Elementary episodes like "Turn it Upside Down" are brilliantly executed, features superlative acting (wow, Jonny Lee Miller's restraint in that ring scene discussion made his performance even…
I'm giving this episode an "A" too. Perhaps Valentine reserves such high standards for Elementary?
That's the thing: Sam has had the script time AND the screentime to play several aspects of Jamie. Sam does a great job at them already. What disservice has been done to him? We've seen him play super romantic, heavily traumatised, charming, and so on.
Frank has been shown to have flaws, which is he's NOT JAMIE (it seems, for many fans). But honest question: what are Jamie's flaws? If we want full development of Jamie, are there any?
It might be both. Tobias Menzies is really a great actor, and the show runners are excited to give him stuff to do.
As a suggested episode format, the One Day, One Room storytellimg style is a great idea. But let's hope the actual script does way, way better than the House episode. It was the worst House episode ever.
Callum Keith Rennie shout out! He's a fantastic actor. @WillHarris should get him dowm for a Random Roles feature.
Gary Kemp's Ronnie Kray (yes, the Gary who wrote "True!) >> Tom Hardy's Ronnie Kray.
