When audiences look at shows and try to pre-determine narrative twists, it seems the vast majority are almost always disappointed. There are many other ways to create an element of surprise that can be equally or more satisfying. In the end, its always good storytelling that enhances and is enhanced by anything

I liked The OA a lot. More than The Handmaid's Tale - the cast was great but the plot became so convoluted I lost interest. And, more than The Path - another good cast, another meandering storyline. But, I'm probably in the minority.
