it seemed pretty pitchy, perhaps as a direct effect of this tryingwaytoohardness to push her voice to be at the center stage of this megalophonic spectacle which ultimately just didn't pay off. again, i'm not a fan of hers, but my friends who were with me at the time (and liked her) seemed unimpressed as well.

for what it's worth, in spite of all their reluctancy to going on tour and general "low-profileness", The Magnetic Fields absolutely kill it when playing live shows.

Gotta love the irony of such an uncanny intellectual level of conversation on a news item about Chris Brown.

f*** yeah En Vogue!

And nobody has been more aware of this throughout the last few years than Kevin himself, who seems inescapably caught between his desperate ludic need for unrestricted "family" approval and a failed wish for self-repentance after whatever permanent emotional damage I'm guessing the self-titled tour must have brought

lack of soundtrack
One thing that was poignantly absent from this movie was the soundtrack/score, usually such an essential element for setting the tone in Sofia's movies. From "Hello It's Me" in the phone scene of "The Virgin Suicides", to the down-tempo dreampop-meets-idm Kevin Shields infected (in a good way)

so let's break this down
(lazy) cold opening, (lazy) monologue (with music and muppets…), parody, parody, penis-themed rap parody, parody, commercial parody,
music, weekend update (with numerous parodies), parody, self-parody,
