It's my least favorite but not because of their first "sell-out" song- I like all eras of Genesis- just I think the material is the weakest. It's like they hadn't quite figured out what to do as a trio.

I actually think their recent stuff is "too" prog. I love Maiden but when their songs break the 6 minute mark, they lose me. It's like there's no reason for them to be that long (as opposed to the best prog, where there is).

Are we all excited about their new album coming out next week? I've already got tix to their tour, too.
They're been great for their entire existence, IMO. Sure I like Waves and Pictures the best, but they never made a lousy record or given anything less than their best, even while experimenting and changing sounds.

Taking the contradictory stance, I very much like discourage Yessongs as an entry point because of the lousy sound quality.
Their three primo albums are the best starting point.

But those solo pieces are so short. Bruford's is literally half a minute. Agree with others that Howe's and Squire's are actually enjoyable, and Anderson's and Wakeman's are the most unnecessary but they're not ear-torture, either.

Accusing an entire genre (or sub-genre, or whatever) of not having "emotions" is a lazy way to attack something one doesn't like while attempting to sound objective. It's an invalid criticism.

Tull only made two albums that can be called "prog" I think- the ones mentioned in the article. And this from a 40 yr career.

And I had the opposite thing. I only started to appreciate what the Pixies do recently, even though I of course heard them years ago because everyone cool was into them and I felt left out. But I fell in love with a lot (not all) of the prog stuff as soon as I heard it.

Marillion is my favorite band of all time. But not for their early material, which is "prog" and had that singer who called himself Fish (yeah, I know), but after he left some normal dude became the singer in 1989 and they've been amazing since.

Why is there always so much crapping on Dream Theater around here? I realize they're not everyone's cup of tea, but they're not objectively "bad," they just make a very specific kind of niche music.
