Ivanova isn't my favorite either but she is generally a fan favorite.
Yes I'm sure part of that is looks, but also the whole tough-girl-who-says-one-liners thing.

I think Tallman was the weakest actor of all the major characters.  The character itself is so great, though.

And He-Man.
Whatever you else you wanna say about the man, he certainly did that thing that art-snobs love where you chase that creative dream and do what you have to do, including writing for freaking He-Man, to make it happen.

I actually don't understand why having a background in stage acting would be bad.  For one thing, didn't Furlan (Delenn) have a similar background?  Also, G'Kar and Londo behave very stage-theatrically and they are the most loved actors on the show.  Besides, I think B5 was generally filmed/directed like a stage play

The speechifying is both the best and worst parts of the show.
Example of best: G'Kar closing out season 3.
Example of worst: this one, also because I like Marilyn Monroe fine but she's not exactly the greatest accomplishment of human history.

A lot of B5's aesthetics can be partially explained as a reaction to Star Trek and other genre fare.

Well maybe they repeat things specifically because at the time they didn't expect everyone would be watching every episode.  Schedules changed, this was before everyone was huluing and torrenting and dvding.

B5 season 1 gets and unfair rep, as does the whole series.  Ok, yeah, I'm a fanboy, but I would argue that about a third of season 1 episodes are perfectly fine genre television, no worse than TNG or whatever, a handful are genuinely really great (including the first episode, which is structurally the best first

If you're a fan of Ivanova, seeing her get some closure with her serious father issues (and Rabbi Theodore Bikel!) is important.
