All I know about Terra Haute is it was destroyed by an exceptionally powerful cheese mold.  It was particularly sad because they had just gotten a new library.

I didn't get the sense that Cocoran was making the kid kill the guy, but rather doped up and with a broken leg the society chap was giving him some trouble, so he just pinned his arms and let her (Kate? Annie?) do the stabbing.
