@avclub-1beee9fdd7f132dc2f36c09ae265122c:disqus  - ok that sounds pretty different to me - and also fun.  But maybe it's silly to argue nuance…good luck!

Are you a professional musician?  What kind of project is the Kickstarter funding?  If I may ask, who is the artist?

In some art schools, there are classes exploring the complexities of skilled labor relations - I assume that and actual personal experiences are what's fueling this debate.

I think it depends on your stature as an artist, and your relationship to the person asking you to perform for free…

I agree, you point is valid - You can do something, or you can not.  I'm  not trying to belittle the artists that chose to do this - clearly, they felt it was worth their time and effort to do so.  What she did is not inherently  unfair, I suppose, as long as these people felt compensated.

It's pretty appalling to ask a paying audience to tip the performers you hired.

Eeek - that whole tip jar/bucket thing is very up-and-coming, the-venue-isn't-paying-you artist kinda stuff - it's not like it was a free show or anything, right?

Floyd - you're not wrong - the artists showed up on their own free will, and were not promised anything they didn't get.  There was no fraud or coercion (that I'm aware of)

I think the larger issue, outside of people's feelings about Kickstarter (which, as far as I'm concerned, is what it is), is that she's charging money for a show and then not passing on even a little of the monetary reward to people who also put in their time & work to perform with her.  It comes off as a little

Just do a Kickstarter, like all the other kids are doing to fund trips.
